Who Should Sit on the Couch?
A Bride's Guide to Choosing Your Dress Fitting Entourage
Wondering who to bring to your wedding dress fitting? Discover why choosing the right people—not the biggest group—can make finding your dream dress easier and more memorable.
One of the questions we're asked most often at Ivory Bridal Studio is:
"How many people should I bring to my dress fitting?"
The answer might surprise you. It's not really about the number. It's about the energy in the room.
I recently welcomed a bride into the studio who arrived with her mom, future mother-in-law, sister, two bridesmaids and a family friend. Every person loved her. Every person wanted the best for her.
Yet by the fourth gown, something had changed. She wasn't looking at herself in the mirror anymore.
She was watching everyone else's reactions. That's when I quietly asked,
"But what do you think?"
She smiled…and admitted she'd forgotten. That moment is exactly why choosing your entourage matters.
Your Dress Isn't Meant to Please Everyone
The perfect wedding dress isn't the one that gets the loudest applause. It's the one that makes you stand a little taller.
The one that makes you stop talking. The one where you catch your reflection and simply know.
Those moments need space. Too many opinions—even from people who love you dearly—can unintentionally cloud what your heart is trying to tell you.
Our Recommendation? Two to Three Trusted People
After helping hundreds of brides find their dream gowns, we've found the sweet spot is usually two to three guests.
Enough people to celebrate with you. Not so many that every dress becomes a committee decision.
Who Makes the Perfect Dress Shopping Companion?
Choose someone who knows you
Not someone who knows wedding trends. Bring the person who knows what makes you feel beautiful, confident and comfortable.
Choose calm over chaos
Wedding planning comes with enough excitement already. Your appointment should feel relaxed, joyful and unhurried.
The people beside you should make you feel supported—not overwhelmed.
Be honest about family dynamics
If there are complicated relationships, remember this: You don't have to include everyone at the very first appointment.
Many brides choose their gown with one or two trusted people and then invite family back later for the special reveal.
It's completely okay to protect your peace.
Think about your wedding morning
Often the best people to bring are the same people who'll be helping you into your dress on your wedding day.
They'll already understand your vision and become part of the memory from the very beginning.
