Off-the-Rack or Made-to-Order? Your Wedding Dress Timeline Explained

Which option is right for your wedding?

One of the questions we hear almost every week at Ivory Bridal is:

"How long does it actually take to get my wedding dress?"

It's a great question—and one we wish more brides asked early in their wedding planning journey.

Your wedding dress timeline isn't just another item on your checklist. It plays a huge role in determining which dresses are available to you and how much flexibility you'll have when choosing your dream gown.

If you're wondering whether an off-the-rack gown or a made-to-order dress is the better choice, here's everything you need to know.

Made-to-Order: The Traditional Bridal Experience

Many of the designer gowns you'll find in bridal boutiques—including our carefully curated collections at Ivory Bridal—are made-to-order.

Once you've said yes to your dress, we place an order with the designer, and your gown is then created specifically for you.

There's something incredibly special about this process. Your dress is crafted from fresh fabrics, beautifully finished, and made especially because you chose it.

How long does it take?

Typically:

  • 4–6 months for the gown to be made and delivered

  • 4–8 weeks for professional alterations

In total, we recommend allowing 6–8 months, although some gowns with intricate beading, custom colours or designer lead times may require even longer.

That's why we encourage brides to start shopping earlier than they think. The earlier you begin, the more designers, styles and customisation options you'll have available.

Off-the-Rack: The Perfect Solution for Shorter Timelines

Not every bride has eight months before her wedding—and that's completely okay.

An off-the-rack gown simply means the sample dress you've fallen in love with becomes your dress. There's no waiting for manufacturing or international shipping.

Instead, your gown moves straight into alterations before it's ready for your wedding day.

This option is ideal for brides who:

  • Have a shorter engagement

  • Are planning a wedding within the next few months

  • Have found the dress and don't want to wait for another one to be made

  • Prefer knowing exactly what they're purchasing

While off-the-rack gowns may require a little more tailoring to achieve the perfect fit, an experienced bridal seamstress can perform remarkable transformations.

Many brides are surprised at just how beautifully a sample gown can be altered to feel completely their own.

Which Option Is Best?

The answer really comes down to one thing:

Your wedding date.

If you're planning well in advance, you'll enjoy the full made-to-order experience with access to every available option.

If your wedding is approaching sooner than expected, off-the-rack opens the door to stunning designer gowns without the long wait.

Neither option is better. They're simply designed for different timelines.

Our Advice? Start Earlier Than You Think

One of the biggest mistakes brides make is waiting until everything else is organised before shopping for their dress.

In reality, your gown is often one of the items with the longest lead time. As soon as your wedding date is confirmed, count backwards.

More than 8 months to go?

Wonderful. You'll have plenty of time to explore our made-to-order collections.

Less than 8 months?

Don't panic.

There are still beautiful options available, and we'll guide you towards gowns that comfortably fit your timeline—including our carefully selected off-the-rack collection.
