Never been to a bridal appointment? A Paarl bridal stylist walks Cape Winelands and Cape Town brides through what to expect, what to bring and how to feel confident before trying on wedding dresses.
We can usually tell, within the first two minutes, which brides have never been to a wedding dress appointment before.
Not because they look nervous, most brides do, and that's lovely, but because they hover by the door, bag still on their shoulder, waiting for someone to tell them what happens next.
So let me tell you, before you even drive out to Paarl.
At Ivory Bridal Studio, your appointment is private. It's your time to explore, ask questions, try on beautiful gowns and discover what makes you feel like a bride.
You can book either our Essential consultation, which gives you 90 minutes and accommodates up to three guests for R480, or our Indulgence experience, which gives you two hours with the entire studio to yourselves, accommodates up to six guests and costs R1400.
Both experiences include sparkling wine, coffee and a selection of teas.
What they don't include is a script.
You set the pace. I just know the rails a little better than you do.
Before you leave home
First things first: you don't need to arrive looking like a bride. You're coming to find your dress, after all!
Wear comfortable underwear that you'd feel happy wearing beneath a dress. If you already own a strapless bra that you love, bring it along, but don't feel you need to buy one especially for the appointment.
If you have an idea of your wedding shoe height, you can wear or bring shoes with a similar heel. But honestly, the dresses have loads of length and we have pedastals, so there is really no real need.
And what about Pinterest?
Please bring your inspiration pictures! We love seeing what catches your eye. Just don't treat your Pinterest board as a shopping list that we have to complete.
Sometimes it's the neckline you love in one photograph, the fabric in another or simply the feeling a particular dress gives you. Those are all useful clues.
One thing we do want you to tell me is your wedding date and venue. A summer ceremony beneath the oak trees in the Cape Winelands might call for different considerations from a winter wedding in Cape Town.
Knowing your date also helps us determine which gowns are realistic options for your timeline.
The first 10 minutes: let's talk
Before we start pulling dresses off the rails, we'll have a conversation.
We'll chat about your wedding date, your venue, the overall feel of your wedding, what you've already imagined wearing and anything you know you don't want.
We'll also discuss your budget.
We know that can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but it's one of the kindest things you can do for yourself. I'd much rather guide you towards gowns that could genuinely be yours than have you fall in love with something that was never within your budget.
Then comes the fun part.
Your bridal stylist will select an initial collection of dresses for you to try. Usually, they will include a few styles you've asked for alongside one or two you might not have considered.
Why?
Because brides surprise themselves all the time.
You might arrive convinced that you want lace and a fitted skirt, only to discover that the crepe gown or soft A-line you weren't even considering makes your heart skip a beat.
You simply can't know until you try it on.
On the pedestal: this is your moment
You'll change in the fitting room, and the stylist help you into your gowns.
Wedding dresses aren't always the easiest things to get into, so please don't feel that you need to manage all those zips, buttons and layers by yourself!
Once you're ready, step out and take a moment to look at yourself.
Before you turn to your guests for their opinions, we want you to notice how you feel.
Does the dress feel like you? Is there something you love? Is there something that doesn't feel quite right?
You don't need to give me a polished answer. An honest reaction is far more helpful.
We won't rush through the experience. Within your appointment time, you can try as many dresses as we need to help you understand what works for you.
And if a gown is close but not quite right, I can use clips or pins to give you a better idea of how it might look with alterations. A sample dress won't necessarily fit you perfectly straight off the rail, so it's important to understand what can be achieved rather than dismissing a style too quickly.
Who should you bring with you?
This is something I always encourage brides to think about before booking.
Our Essential consultation accommodates up to three guests, while Indulgence accommodates up to six.
It can be tempting to invite everyone you love, but sometimes a smaller group makes the experience much easier.
Bring the people who know you, support you and will help you feel confident in your decision.
You don't need a room full of votes. You need people who will listen to you.
If opinions start flying in every direction, I'll gently bring the focus back to the person who matters most: you.
After all, it's your wedding dress.
What happens if you don't find your dress?
First, take a breath.
Not every bride finds her gown at her first appointment, and I never want you to feel that you have to say yes simply because you've tried on several beautiful dresses.
Sometimes the appointment helps you narrow down your preferences. You discover that you love a particular neckline, feel most comfortable in an A-line silhouette or prefer clean, uncomplicated fabrics.
Perhaps you leave with two or three gowns you can't stop thinking about.
That's progress!
We'll talk about what you loved, what still needs deciding and whether you'd like to explore anything further.
We'll also discuss your timeline. Made-to-order gowns need time to arrive, so if your wedding is approaching, we'll look honestly at the options available from our existing collection.
Either way, the aim is for you to leave with a plan, not simply a head full of possibilities.
Your first appointment should feel exciting, not intimidating
If you've been putting off booking because you don't know what to expect, I hope this has helped.
You don't need to know your silhouette, understand fabrics or arrive with the perfect Pinterest board. You don't even need to be certain about what you want.
That's what we're here for.
At Ivory Bridal Studio in Paarl, we want your dress-shopping experience to feel personal, relaxed and special from the moment you walk through the door.
Whether you're a Cape Winelands bride or travelling from Cape Town, we'd love to welcome you.
