Before You Say Yes: The Questions Every Paarl Bride Should Ask Her Consultant

There’s a moment in every fitting room that I love watching unfold.

The hush. The little tilt of the head. The smile that says, “This could be the one.”

It’s one of my favourite parts of being a bridal stylist.

But here at Ivory Bridal Studio, I always tell my brides that the “yes” moment is only half of the decision.

The other half happens when you sit down, take a breath, and ask a few practical questions before you sign anything.

Because while finding a wedding dress should absolutely feel special, it’s also a significant investment — and you deserve to know exactly what you’re saying yes to.

After years of helping brides find their gowns, I’ve found that the happiest brides aren’t necessarily the ones who found “the one” fastest.

They’re the ones who left their appointment feeling excited and informed.

So, whether you’re shopping in Paarl, the Cape Winelands, Cape Town or anywhere else, here are the questions I encourage every bride to ask.

1. “What’s actually included in this price?”

It sounds obvious, but this is one of the most important questions you can ask.

Is the quoted price for the gown only? Are alterations separate? What about a veil, petticoat, bustle or other finishing touches?

A gown that initially looks like a great deal can become considerably more expensive once additional costs are added.

Ask for the full picture before you commit. A good bridal consultant should be happy to explain exactly what you're paying for.

2. “How long will my dress take to arrive?”

Your wedding date should be part of the conversation from the very beginning.

Made-to-order gowns and off-the-rack dresses have completely different timelines, and you also need to allow time for alterations once your gown arrives.

Ask:

  • How long will the gown take to arrive?

  • Is there a rush-order option if necessary?

  • When should alterations begin?

  • How many fittings are likely?

  • How much time will we have before the wedding for unexpected changes?

At Ivory, we always encourage brides to think about their gown timeline as a whole journey, rather than simply asking when the dress will arrive.

3. “What happens if my body changes before the wedding?”

This is a question many brides are nervous to ask, but there's really no need to be.

Your body is allowed to change between saying yes to your dress and walking down the aisle. Life happens.

Ask your consultant how much the gown can realistically be taken in or let out and whether there are structural limitations.

The important thing is to understand what's possible before you need it.

And remember: your dress should fit you. You don't need to spend the months before your wedding trying to become a different person to fit into it.

4. “Who will be doing my alterations?”

This is a big one. A beautiful gown still needs to be beautifully fitted.

Ask whether alterations are done in-house or outsourced, who will be working on your dress and whether you'll have the opportunity to meet them.

At Ivory, alterations are a separate part of the bridal journey, and we work with an experienced seamstress to make sure your gown is fitted specifically to you.

Because the difference between a dress that fits and a dress that fits beautifully can be enormous.

5. “What is your deposit and cancellation policy?”

Perhaps not the most romantic question, but definitely one worth asking.

Before you pay a deposit, make sure you understand:

  • How much is required to secure the gown?

  • When is the remaining balance due?

  • What happens if your plans change?

  • Are deposits refundable?

  • What happens if you need to cancel or postpone your wedding?

You don't want to discover the answers to these questions when something unexpected happens.

6. “Can I see the gown in natural light?”

This is one of my favourites.

Bridal boutiques are designed to make gowns look beautiful — and that's exactly what they should do!

But fabrics, lace, beading and colour can look completely different in natural daylight.

If possible, step towards a window and look at the gown in a different light. And think about where you'll actually be wearing it.

A gown that looks incredible under studio lighting should still make you feel incredible when you're standing outside in the Cape Winelands.

7. “What does saying yes actually mean?”

This is perhaps the most important question of all. Once you say yes, what happens?

Is the sample reserved? Is your gown ordered immediately? Is your deposit refundable? Can you change your mind later?

There’s no reason to feel awkward asking. A good bridal consultant won't be offended by an informed bride. They'll welcome the questions.

The right dress should feel good for more than five minutes

None of these questions are meant to take away from the magic of finding your dress.

Quite the opposite.

I want my brides to have that magical moment and leave knowing exactly what happens next.

Because your wedding dress isn't just the gown you fall in love with in the fitting room.

It's the gown that needs to arrive on time, be fitted beautifully, work with your plans and ultimately make you feel like yourself when you walk down the aisle.

So ask the questions. Take a breath.

And if the answer to your questions makes you feel even more confident about saying yes — then perhaps you've found your dress. 🤍

If you're beginning your wedding dress search and would love a bridal experience built around honest advice, beautiful gowns and no pressure, we'd love to welcome you to Ivory Bridal Studio in Paarl.
