The Bridal Budget Timeline: How to Spread Out the Cost of Your Wedding Dress
There is something I see with brides again and again.
They reach the final two months before the wedding and suddenly realise there is still so much to organise — the gown, alterations, veil, shoes, jewellery, perhaps a second look… and somehow all of those costs seem to arrive at exactly the same time.
And honestly? That can take some of the joy out of getting married.
The stress isn't always about the amount you're spending. Sometimes it's simply when you're having to spend it.
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to think about your bridal wardrobe as a journey rather than one enormous expense that needs to happen all at once.
Start with the gown
Your wedding dress will usually be one of the biggest purchases in your bridal wardrobe, so it makes sense to deal with it early.
At Ivory Bridal Studio, we recommend that brides ideally start looking around 9–12 months before their wedding. This gives you time to find the gown you genuinely love, place your order, and allow enough time for it to arrive before alterations begin.
Our current designer gowns generally take around 14–16 weeks to arrive once ordered, with rush options available on selected orders.
But ordering early isn't only about logistics. It means that once your gown is sorted, you can stop thinking about it every week.
You've made the decision. You've secured the dress. One big piece of your wedding is done.
Then build around the dress
Once your gown is chosen, the rest of your bridal look becomes much easier to plan. You can start thinking about:
Your veil
Do you want something soft and simple? Dramatic and cathedral length? Perhaps a veil with lace or delicate detailing?
Your shoes
You can choose something that complements the dress rather than trying to find shoes that work with an outfit you haven't seen yet.
Your jewellery and accessories
These can be added gradually, rather than becoming another last-minute expense.
Your alterations
These happen much closer to the wedding, but planning for them early means you aren't surprised by another bill at the end.
At Ivory, alterations are separate from the purchase of your gown, and we generally begin the alteration process around 4–6 weeks before the wedding, depending on what your dress requires.
Think of your wedding wardrobe as stages
Instead of:
Dress + veil + shoes + alterations + accessories = one enormous final bill
Think:
Early engagement: Find and secure your gown
↓
Middle of the planning: Add veil and accessories
↓
A few months before: Finalise shoes and styling details
↓
4–6 weeks before: Alterations
↓
Wedding week: Enjoy it!
The exact timeline will look different for every bride, and that's completely okay.
There is no magic percentage of your wedding budget that you should spend on your dress.
Your wedding is yours.
What matters is understanding what you're comfortable spending and giving yourself enough time to spread the costs wherever possible.
The dress should be something you enjoy — not something you dread paying for
I've seen brides try to do everything in the final two months — gown, alterations, veil, shoes, all at once.
And it's stressful in a way that has very little to do with the dress itself.
Spreading the spend out over your engagement can take so much pressure off.
It allows you to enjoy each stage rather than feeling like every new wedding appointment comes with another invoice.
And perhaps most importantly, it gives you the freedom to choose your dress because you love it, rather than because you're running out of time.
